Web developments.

So, I have been doing quite a bit web work lately, having gotten the bug back after doing a revision of the site at work. I have been exploring frameworks and started developing some database schemes and layouts for a bunch of new sites I am working on.

The first one is http://www.rwjl.net (Real World Judo League) which is going to be a site where Judoka can arrange and track fights between one another. I want to put a "ladder" or many ladders in place for you to climb. As well as that a general ranking based on the number of wins.

I am thinking of a system whereby both players have to confirm the result of the match, along with a comment about the fight and what technique won it.

What other features/ideas have you got, please let me know!

I have also been working on a new version of the VWJL (Virtual World Judo League), also I have been thinking about how to build a online membership system that would be modular so it could be used by clubs, associations, etc. With secure methods of sharing that data. The idea being that clubs could track their memberships, sessions, etc. And have that data sent/collected by say the national federation.

Judoka could have a portal on the system(s) so they could say... enter competitions. Maybe find out where other members of their club are planning on competing, or if they are training somewhere else, so you could go along.

Maybe, you could see the person who you fought at a competition, and discover where they train.

I would be intersted to hear what people think the best system they could imagine would have feature-wise. Both the views of associations, players and clubs.

Let me know.

On PHP Frameworks.

Lately I have been kicking off some new Judo related web projects.
Specifically, I have started work on a site called The Real World Judo League (www.rwjl.net) which is going to be a ladder tournament system for Judoka.

I have been exploring development frameworks and trying to find a useful and practical solution. I have move partially from Perl to PHP, and have been exploring frameworks such as CakePHP and Seagull. I have been leaning towards CodeIgniter (http://codeigniter.com/) which is easy to get working, light and flexible. Itseems to install almost everywhere and seems to have a strong developer community.

The plan for the VWJL is to quickly get user registration, login, logout running (easily done with plugins) then get one big ladder tournament working.

You'll be able to find people to fight, schedule a match and record the result. The winner climbing the ladder, the loser slipping down.

I am hoping to make it pretty flexible so you'll be able to say find people who train at your club, fight them in Randori or in a "contest" and then record the result. Then maybe check where the person above you on the ladder lives and arrange a trip across to their club to fight them. Then maybe when on holiday in another country find people to fight over there? (Maybe schedule your holiday so you can fight someone above you?)

Anyway... head over to www.rwjl.net and enter your email and I'll let you know when a Beta is ready to play with.

My employers site reboot goes live.

Hi all, quietly in the background at work we have been refreshing the corporate website.

So this afternoon it "went live".

I have been beavering away on this site for a while and we've managed to sneak in some nice things on the site. So... What have we managed to shoe horn into the site without utterly rebuilding it from scratch.

So we have the blog of course, the tagcloud, search.
On the front page we have a little flash, some javascript to feed in the RSS from the blog. The boxes are filled in from the DB via PHP. I have slipped in some microformats, but shssssh don't tell the boss. :)

Take a look and check it out.
